Paints & Finishes

Tuscan Foundry Products supplies cast iron rainwater goods in five finishes. Four are factory-applied by paint specialists; one, Heritage Linseed, is applied by hand in our own workshop. The right choice depends on the building, its exposure, the construction programme and who will maintain it.

Comparing the finishes

FinishWhat it isBest suited toLead timeMaintenance
Heritage PrimedRAL 7024 dark grey primer with rust inhibitors. A protective coating only, not a finish.Projects where the system will be painted on site after installation.StandardMust be top coated. Not a durable finish in itself.
Heritage ExtraHigh-solids two-pack polyurethane, black semi-gloss. Ready to fix, no site painting. Most projects where a modern durable finish is acceptable and the programme is tight.3–5 days on standard itemsAnnual inspection. Around 10 years before recoating, which requires full preparation.
RAL & BS ColoursAny RAL or BS colour reference, or colour matched from a sample. Supplied with a matching touch-up tin.Projects with a specified colour scheme other than black.Longer than standard — confirmed at orderAs Heritage Extra.
Heritage CoastalEnhanced coating system for aggressive marine environments.Buildings within 5km of the coast or a salt water estuary.Confirmed at orderAnnual inspection, with attention to salt deposition.
Heritage LinseedFive coats of traditional linseed oil paint, brush applied by hand in our workshop. 38 standard colours.Listed buildings, conservation areas and scheduled monuments where a historically correct, breathable finish is required.3–4 weeks April–September; longer October–MarchRecoat at 12–15 years by cleaning and overcoating. No stripping or sanding.

Which finish should I specify?

Four questions usually settle it.

  • Is the building listed or in a conservation area? If so, Heritage Linseed is the historically correct choice and the one a conservation officer is most likely to accept without discussion.
  • Is the building within 5km of the coast? Salt loading and wind-driven moisture favour a two-pack system. Talk to us about Heritage Coastal before specifying linseed.
  • How long is the programme? Linseed cures by oxidation and cannot be hurried — allow three to four weeks. If the goods are needed in days, specify Heritage Extra.
  • Who will maintain it? Linseed is designed to be maintained rather than replaced, and rewards it. Where no maintenance commitment exists, a two-pack finish may serve the building better.

Heritage Linseed

Traditional linseed oil paint was the finish used on architectural ironwork across Britain for more than two centuries. Heritage Linseed is that finish: two coats of linseed oil red oxide primer followed by three linseed oil topcoats, brush applied by hand, in any of 38 standard colours. It carries a ten-year warranty on the applied film.

Read more about Heritage Linseed, or see the full technical specification TFP/THLS/01 for preparation, coat build, cure schedule, limitations and warranty terms.

Heritage paint, RAL colours and coastal finishes

Details of our primed, painted, RAL colour-matched and coastal finishes are set out on the heritage paint finishes page.

Fixings — whatever finish you choose

Fixings must be zinc-plated or sherardised. Stainless steel should never be used in contact with cast iron: the galvanic potential difference between the two metals in the presence of moisture accelerates corrosion of the casting at every fixing point. This applies to every finish above and should be carried into the installation specification.

Why linseed oil
paint for cast iron?

Linseed oil paint is not a modern product. It has been used to protect and colour cast iron since the material first came into widespread architectural use in the early nineteenth century. It is the most historically authentic finish available for cast iron gutters, downpipes, hoppers, and associated ironwork on listed and historic buildings.

Unlike conventional alkyd or acrylic systems, linseed oil paint does not form a brittle surface film. It penetrates and bonds with the iron, remaining flexible as the metal expands and contracts. It self-heals at minor scratches, is fully vapour-permeable, and its natural pigments develop a patina over time that no manufactured paint can replicate.

For conservation officers, architects, and specifiers working on listed buildings, linseed oil paint is increasingly accepted — and in some cases preferred — by local planning authorities as the appropriate finish for external metalwork.

01
Historically Authentic
The original finish for cast iron architectural metalwork. Used continuously since the early nineteenth century on buildings of every period and status.
02
Penetrating & Flexible
Bonds with the metal rather than forming a surface film. Remains flexible through thermal movement, resisting cracking and delamination.
03
Self-Healing
Minor scratches are absorbed and re-sealed over time. Maintenance cycles are significantly extended compared with conventional systems.
04
Vapour-Permeable
Breathes with the building. Moisture is not trapped beneath the coating — critical for cast iron on historic structures.
05
Conservation-Accepted
Recognised as the appropriate and preferred finish for metalwork on listed buildings and scheduled monuments.
06
Natural Pigments
Drawn from mineral and earth sources — many in use since the medieval period. Each colour develops a living patina with age and light.
