Coastal Paint Finishes – Cast Iron Guttering

  • July 14, 2022
Coastal Paint Finishes _ Cast Iron Guttering

Coastal Paint Finishes for Cast Iron Guttering

The Durability of paint systems is not an exact science, neither is the predictability of atmospheric conditions to which a product will be exposed. Prevailing winds may carry airborne contaminants (e.g. seaspray from the coast) predominantly on to one face of a structure.

Areas falling within a coastal /marine environment are classified as a C4 corrosion category. The conditions in these areas are more aggressive than those experienced in many other areas due to the prevalence of airborne water and salt particles. If these water and salt particles can form an electrolyte on the painted finish, any exposed or damaged areas of the painted finish will begin to corrode the Iron substrate at an increased rate compared to an inland location.

Protecting Coastal Ironwork – Paint Finishes for Coastal and Marine Environments

Coastal and Marine environments provide a challenging environment for metalwork on period buildings, and metalwork not properly protected will deteriorate at a rapid rate.

To combat this aggressive environment, specialist paints with an overall coating thickness, need to be much greater. This increased coating thickness forms a longer-lasting barrier between the environment and the substrate thus delaying the onset of corrosion.

Maintaining Cast Iron Gutter in Coastal Locations

A robust maintenance regime must be put in place to ensure that no salt or other contaminants can build up on the surface of the coating. Irrespective of the volume and quality of coating applied, regular maintenance and repainting will be required to ensure your Cast Iron products can continue to combat the harsh environments that coastal conditions present.

Coastal Paint Finish for Cast Iron Guttering

For guidance, coastal areas are estimated to be areas within 5km (approximately 3 miles) of the coast. Areas falling within a coastal or marine environment are classified as a C4 corrosion category.

Marine Paint Finishes for Coastal Guttering

The durability of paint systems is not an exact science, neither is the predictability of atmospheric conditions to which a product will be exposed. For this reason, we are unable to be very specific regarding the number of years the paint will last. To combat this aggressive environment, our paint system finishes for marine environments have been developed over many years to ensure a quality and long-lasting finish.

Marine Paint Finish Specification for Cast Iron Guttering

Marine and Coastal paint finish specifications can be offered on all rainwater products and the Hertitage express (TX) soil system. Black painted or RAL and BS colours are also available to this specification.

Coastal Guttering Repairs and Maintenance – Site Survey

It is imperative that a robust maintenance regime is put in place to ensure that no salt or other contaminants can build up on the surface of the coating. Irrespective of the volume and quality of coating applied, regular maintenance and repainting will be required to ensure your
